Google Chrome extensions allow users to customize their browsing experience by adding features and functionalities.
Installing and managing extensions is simple, whether on Windows, macOS, or a Chromebook.
Follow the steps below to add and manage extensions efficiently.
Important Points to Remember
- Visit Chrome Web Store to browse and install add-ons.
- Click the puzzle piece symbol in the upper-right section of Chrome to access your extensions.
- Manage all installed add-ons by going to chrome://extensions or selecting “Manage extensions” via the puzzle icon.
Installing from the Chrome Web Store
- Open the Chrome Web Store
Launch Chrome and go to Chrome Web Store. A vast selection of extensions is available for different purposes. - Find an Extension
Use the search box to look up a specific extension or browse through categories to discover new ones. - View Extension Details
Click on an extension to review its features, images, and user feedback. It’s wise to read reviews and check privacy policies before installation. - Add to Chrome
Press the “Add to Chrome” button. A confirmation prompt will appear. - Confirm Installation
Click “Add extension” to finalize the process. Your extension will now be accessible in the puzzle piece menu.
Accessing and Using Extensions
- Open Installed Extensions
Click the puzzle piece icon in the top-right corner to see all added extensions. - Activate an Extension
Click on an extension’s name to use it. Each add-on functions differently, offering various options or performing tasks immediately. - Pin an Extension
To make an extension always visible, click the puzzle icon and select the pushpin beside the extension’s name. The icon will now remain in your toolbar for quick access.
Modifying Extension Settings
- Access Extensions Menu
Click the puzzle icon, then choose “Manage extensions” to view all installed add-ons. - Open Extension Details
Select “Details” under the extension you wish to modify. - Adjust Permissions and Preferences
Depending on the extension, you can manage:- Site Permissions – Choose where the add-on can operate.
- Incognito Mode – Enable or disable access in private browsing.
- Additional Settings – Some extensions offer extra customization options.
Disabling or Removing Extensions
- Go to Extensions Settings
Click the puzzle icon and select “Manage extensions.” - Disable an Extension
Toggle the switch off to temporarily deactivate an extension without removing it. - Uninstall an Extension
Click “Remove” and confirm that you want to permanently delete an extension.
Installing External Extensions
- Enable Developer Mode
Open “Manage extensions” and activate “Developer mode” at the top-right. - Load an Unpacked Extension
Click “Load unpacked” and select the folder containing the extension files.
